The Dagwood To Rival All Dagwoods
Google a Dagwood sandwich and this is what you get: "a towering, multi-layered
sandwich, often filled with a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables,
popularized by the comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead."
There is no real recipe. Dagwood built his sandwiches high. Our goal was to use,
as one fast-food company likes to say, "all the meats." That is, all the Fantasma's
Finest deli meats. In one delicious sandwich. On Italian bread, of course!
Dagwood Deli Meat Sandwich
Makes 6-8 servings
1 loaf Italian bread
6 slices sliced provolone cheese
5 slices tomato
1 (1/12-pound) package Fantasma's Finest German Style Sweet Bologna
1 (1-pound) package Fantasma's Finest Shaved Deli Ham
1 (1-pound) package Fantasma's Finest Shaved Pepper Beef
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons giardiniera hot relish
Banana pepper rings
Shredded iceberg lettuce
Fresh basil leaves
Olive oil
Salt and pepper
Slice the bread down the center, leaving a "hinge" so it opens like a book.
Layer cheese then tomatoes, bologna, ham and beef.
Combine mayonnaise and relish in a bowl; liberally spread mixture on the opposite piece of bread.
Top sandwich with pepperoncini and lettuce.
Garnish with basil leaves. Drizzle olive oil and salt and pepper over the sandwich fixings and press top piece of bread to compact the sandwich layers.
Slice and serve sandwich immediately or wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight to let the flavors meld.
This sandwich is perfect for a summer picnic or a party anytime of year.
